Arthritis General
The inflammation of one or more joints in the body is called Arthritis. Joint is a strong connection between the bones. Joint provides movement and flexibility to the bones. Any disorder of the joint may affect the normal functioning of the joint.
Arthritis is common, it affects people of all ages, sexes and races. Arthritis is more common in women and occurs more frequently as a person gets older. Arthritis is not just a single disease; it is a way of describing a number of joint diseases. It is a condition that involves the inflammation of joints.
Arthritis is a result of breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage is like a cushion between the joints. It role is to protect the joints by absorbing pressure and shock. It enables smooth movement of the joints. Without Cartilage, the bones will rub against one another. This produces stiffness and swelling of joints.
Arthritis is among the top causes of Disability. A person with arthritis finds it difficult to remain physically active. It increases the risk of disorders like Obesity, High Cholesterol and Heart diseases.
Arthritis symptoms may come and go away. They can be mild or severe. The symptoms may get worse over time. The major problem in a person with Arthritis is joint pain. Joint pain in arthritis is a result of inflammation that occurs around the joint. Other arthritis symptoms are
Swollen Joint
Stiffness
Decreased range of motion
Inability to do daily activities
Arthritis may affect the Lungs, Kidneys, Eyes and Heart.
Arthritis types
More than 100 different types of Arthritis are present. Some common forms are:
Inflammatory Arthritis
The immune system protects against various harmful substances. It fights diseases and infections by producing internal inflammation. When something goes wrong with the immune system, it mistakenly attacks the joints with uncontrolled inflammation. It causes joint erosion and may harm the internal organs as well. Three main forms of Inflammatory Arthritis are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis.
Osteoarthritis
It is the most common type of arthritis. Osteoarthritis may affect both larger and smaller joints. The joints of hands, feet, wrist, knee, hip and back are affected. Osteoarthritis initially affects the Cartilage. Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue covering the bones. It provides cushion to the bones. In the absence of cartilage the bones may rub against one another causing pain, stiffness and swelling. Over the time the condition worsens. The pain becomes chronic, inflammation arises and the joints lose strength. The probability of developing Osteoarthritis increases with:
Growing age
Family History
Excessive Weight
Previous injury to Joints
When the symptoms are mild, they can be managed by balancing activity with rest, Hot and Cold therapy, Regular physical activity, Maintaining a healthy weight and strengthening the Joint muscles.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a problem of the body’s own immune system. The immune system starts attacking the body tissues. It damages the joint lining and the cartilage. It eventually causes the erosion of the two opposing bones. The joints in the elbows, hands, wrist and knees are affected the most. If not treated it leads to severe deformity. It mostly occurs in people aged 20 and above. The exact cause of Rheumatoid Arthritis is not known.
Psoriatic Arthritis
Psoriasis gives rise to Psoriatic arthritis. The formation of red Skin patches followed by arthritis is Psoriasis Arthritis. The symptoms include stiffness, swelling and continuous joint pain. If left untreated it may cause permanent disability and loss of functioning of hand.
Single Herb Make a paste of powdered Sesame seeds with warm Sesame oil. Apply it on the affected area.
OR : Soak 1 tsp of black Sesame seeds overnight in quarter cup of water. Drink the water and chew the seeds in the morning.
Prepare Root decoction. Drink 3-4 cups a day.
Or have Root extract capsules.
Add 2 tablespoons of Flax or Flax oil in your daily diet.
Note: Do not heat or cook seeds or oil.
Cut the bark of White Willow. Boil it. Add Ginger to activate Willow bark. Drink twice a day.
Finely chop the roots. Prepare a decoction. Drink once a day.
Use herb poultice topically for treating weak bones and joints.
Add Cucumber in your regular diet.
Make tea of Stinging Nettle leaves. Take it two times a day.
Or
Add fresh or dried leaves of Stinging Nettle ( Bichu Buti ) into a tub of warm water. Soak your painful joints into the water. It provides gentle relief from aching of joints.
Drumstick For Arthiritis
Include cooked Drumstick in your daily diet. It is quite useful to enhance physical power.
Take Horseradish flowers. Prepare vegetable and eat it once a day.
OR : Take fresh Horseradish bark and grind with water. Apply on affected parts.
OR : Take out the seeds of Horseradish. Rub them on affected parts.
Prepare a decoction of Alstonia Scholaris root. Take it, twice a day.
Heat some fresh leaves of Mint on low flame. Put it over the affected muscle or joint when warm.
Drink 1 cup of Pineapple juice per day.
Mix 1 tsp of Lemon juice and Honey in a cup of warm water. Drink twice a day.
It helps in reducing inflammation and expels the harmful toxins from the Body.
Mix 1 tsp Turmeric in a cup of luke warm water. Drink two times a day.
Take one tablespoon Carom ( Ajvain ). Boil in one glass of water. Steam to the affected part twice a day.
Guava ( Amrood ) Leaves for Arthritis
Crush some Guava ( Amrood ) Leaves. Add little water to make a paste. Apply on the affected part twice a day.
Include Dandelion ( Dudal ) leaves in salad and eat raw.
OR Take an Infusion of the leaves twice a day.
Make a decoction of Sida Acuta plant. Drink 30 ml of it twice a day.
OR : Crush Sida Acuta plant. Cook it with Castor oil. Apply it on the affected areas.
Boil root paste of Clerodendrum in Castor oil. Massage using it on the inflamed Joints.
Boil leaves of Balloon Vine in Castor oil. Apply it over inflamed joints.
Drink 10 ml root decoction of Boerhavia Diffusa twice a day.
Warm the leaves of Damiana ( Dhatura ). Use them as a poultice over Swelling or inflamed Joints
Make paste of Cat Tail Plant's leave by adding some lime juice in it. Apply it over painful joints.
Warm the leaves of Bacopa Monnieri ( Brahmi ). Apply Castor oil on it. Bandage them over painful joints.
Prepare leave decoction of Indigo. Drink 5 ml twice a day.
Make poultice with leaves of Vitex Negundo. Warm and apply on painful joints.
Prepare a decoction with leaves of Indian Borage. Drink 30 ml twice a day.
Drink 5 ml Potato juice early in the morning.
Or : Cut a Potato ( Aalu ) into thin slices without peeling it off. Put it into a bowl of drinking water. Drink frequently from this.
Brown Mustard ( Lal Sarson ) Seeds for Arthritis
Take Brown Mustard ( Lal Sarson ) Seeds. Powder them. Add water to make a paste. Apply it on affected parts and cover. Leave it for half an hour.
Apply root paste of Sida Cordifolia over painful Joints.
Apply a poultice, made of Betel leaves paste and little lukewarm water, on the painful joints.
Massage using Lepidium Sativum seed Oil over inflammed areas.
Drink 2 tablespoons Aloe Vera ( Gheekumari ) juice twice a day for 15 days.
Use Caesalpinia Bonduc ( Karanjwa ) seed oil for massage over painful joints.
Black Cumin for Arthritis
Mix Vinegar, Black Seed oil and Honey in 2:1:4 ratio. Take 2 tsp of it twice a day.
Make leaf decoction of Bodhi Tree. Pour it over painful joints.
Make a decoction of Yucca root.
Drink to get relief in Rheumatoid Arthritis.
You can also add some Honey for better taste.
Castor Oil bears Antiarthritic and Antiinflammtory properties. Thus, it acts as a pain and inflammation reliever due to Arthritis.
Massage with lukewarm Castor Oil over affected joints. Cover the massaged areas.
Prepare a decoction using stems of Golden Bamboo. Pour it over inflamed Joint. Tie your Joint using a piece of cloth after its application.
Drink a cup of Beetroot ( Chakundar ) juice once a day.
Consume 30-40 gms of Ginger ( Adrak ) regularly to improve the painful Arthritis.
OR : You may also use Ginger oil for Massage on the affected areas.
Add 2-3 cups of Epsom Salt in a bath tub filled with hot water. Soak in it for 15-20 minutes. It soothes the joint stiffness.
Prepare Alfalfa seed tea. Take 3-4 cups a day. Repeat it for 2 weeks.
Have an Apple ( Seb ) after every meal to neutralize your Uric Acid.
Night Jasmine Essential Oil contains Anti Arthritic property. This property helps to cure arthritis. Add 10 drops in a teaspoon of Coconut Oil or Mustard Oil. Slightly warm the mixture. Massage over the affected area for 10 minutes daily at night.
Yarrow Essential Oil contains Antiarthritic property. Antiarthritic property of the oil aids to demote the inflammation associated with Arthritis.
Mix 10 to 12 drops of Yarrow Essential Oil with any base oil (Which contains Antiinflammatory and Analgesic properties) like; Castor Oil, Olive Oil etc. Massage the affected area with this slightly warm combination. Do it two times a day. You may feel the effectiveness of this combination within 2 weeks.
Note : Don't skip a single day as far as possible. Continue the process until the problem persists.
Cinnamon Essential Oil bears Anti arthritic property. This property is useful to treat inflammation and pain of joints.
Take 40 ml of base oil ( like; Mustard Oil, Sesame Oil ). Add 15 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil. Store the mixture in a bottle. Warm the required mixture before use. Massage the affected area with this lukewarm mixture twice a day.
Helichrysum Essential Oil contains Antiarthritic property. It alleviates the pain and inflammation associated with Arthritis.
Mix 5 drops of Helichrysum Essential Oil with one teaspoon of base oil ( Preferably Mustard Oil, Olive Oil ). Warm it slightly. Rub it over the affected part for 5 minutes at night. Cover the area.
Castor has Antiarthritic effect, as it works good to cure pain and inflammation associated with Arthritis.
Take the leaves of Castor ( Arandi ). Wash and pat dry. Steam them and directly apply externally to get relief from Arthritis pain.
Castor ( Arandi ) Leaves for Arthritis
Castor ( Arandi ) bears Antiarthritic quality. As it aids the joint pains associated with Arthritis.
Steam or warm the leaf of Castor ( Arandi ). Keep it over the affected joint and bandage. Do it daily at night.
Pumpkin ( Kaddu in India ) seeds has Antiarthritic and Anti-inflammatory effects. These effects are useful to curb pain and inflammation related to Arthritis.
Grind fresh or dried Pumpkin ( Kaddu in India ) seeds with some water to make a paste. Apply it over the affected joint. Leave it for half an hour. Wash with normal water and pat dry the area. Apply any oil which has analgesic effect. In Addition, You may take dried Pumpkin ( Kaddu in India ) seeds in snacks.
OR : Roast dried Pumpkin ( Kaddu in India ) seeds on low heat. Eat 2 tablespoons a day.
The antiinflammatory property of Fenugreek ( Methi in India ) provides relief from Inflammation due to Arthritis. Fenugreek contains a powerful antioxidant, Diosgenin. It helps in reducing the Pain.
Soak one tablespoon of Fenugreek Seeds in a cup of water. Leave them overnight. The next morning, chew the seeds and drink the water. Take it for a month.
OR Take one teaspoon of Fenugreek Seed powder with Lukewarm water. Do this on an empty stomach in the morning. Take it daily for 2 to 3 months.
The antiarthritic property of Night Jasmine ( Harsingar in India ) is helpful in reducing the Pain and Inflammation due to Arthritis.
Crush 6 to 7 Night Jasmine leaves and boil in a glass of water. Boil until the water remains half. Leave it overnight. The next morning, strain, stir and drink on an empty stomach. Drink daily for a month.
Basil Essential Oil ( Tulsi Ka Tel in India ) possesses strong Anti inflammatory property. This property helps to reduce the inflammation of the joints. It reduces the pain and swelling due to Arthritis.
Add 1 to 2 drops of Basil Essential Oil in 2 tablespoons of Carrier Oil ( Olive Oil ). Mix well. Apply it onto the affected area. Gently massage for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat this twice a day for 2 to 3 weeks.
Camphor Essential Oil has antiinflammatory and Analgesic properties. It is used to reduce Muscles pains and Joint Pains. Add a few chunks of Camphor into some lukewarm Olive Oil or some Mustard Oil. Massage the Joints with this oil. It will reduce the Joint Pains associated with Arthritis.
Peanut Oil ( Mungphali Ka Tel in India ) possesses strong Analgesic and Antiinflammatory properties. These properties help to reduce the pain and inflammation of the Joints due to Arthritis.
Take 1 to 2 tablespoons of Peanut Oil. Apply it on the affected area. Gently massage until it gets absorbed in the skin. Repeat this 2 to 3 times a day for 20 days.
Extract the juice of Wheatgrass around 150 ml. Soak a cotton into it and after that put it on the affected area. Repeat this procedure twice a day.
Add 3 drops of Lemon Essential Oil into a glass of fresh water or juice and drink twice a day. It alleviates the Arthritic Pain.
Add 1/4th teaspoon of Turmeric powder into your soups, salads and vegetables with a pinch of Black pepper. After two weeks, increase the daily intake to ½ teaspoon. After four weeks increase the quantity to 1 teaspoon. Regular intake of Turmeric will prevent Joint pain and Inflammation.
Or
Mix 1 tablespoon of Turmeric powder into a glass of lukewarm Milk. Drink this milk during night time to induce sound sleep without any pain.
Or
Boil a 1/4th glass of water and add 1 tablespoon of Turmeric powder in it. Stir well. Reduce the heat to simmer for 10 minutes. Allow it to cool and drink. Repeat this procedure once a day.
Note: After 3 to 4 hours, the potency of the Turmeric reduces from 10% to 6% and gradually lowers over the time. So, drink this right after you make it.
Add 100 ml of Benzoin Essential Oil in a heating pan. Slightly warm it. Massage with it to your skin pores to reduce the aching Joints.
Apply a poultice, made of powdered seeds and warm water, on the painful joints.
Eat 2 Garlic ( Lehsun ) cloves on an empty Eat 2 Garlic ( Lehsun ) cloves on an empty stomach. It provides relief from Arthritis.
OR :
Grind few Garlic ( Lehsun ) cloves to extract the juice. Dilute it with any warm Carrier Oil. Apply this mixture on the affected areas to get relief.
Mix a half teaspoon of Cinnamon ( Dalchini ) with 1 teaspoon fo Honey ( Shehad ). Consume it daily to get best results.
Regularly drink 2 cups of Camelia Sinensis tea to reduce pain in Arthritis. Boil Liquorice ( Mulethi ) crushed roots in 150 ml of water. Strain it off. Drink this decoction once a day. It reduces the inflammation and pain in Arthritis.
Camelia Sinensis for Arthritis
Regularly drink 2 cups of Camelia Sinensis tea to reduce pain in Arthritis.
Regularly consume Cayenne ( Lal Mirch ) in your food to get relief from Arthritis.
Mix 3 teaspoons of Black Pepper powder, 6 teaspoons of Dried Ginger powder and 6 teaspoons of Caraway seed powder. Consume half teaspoon of this mixture with one glass of water, three times a day.
Rub with Eucalyptus Essential Oil ( Cafe de Ka Tel ) on affected area to lessen the swelling and pain in joints.
Take Kalanchoe Pinnata leaves and warm it. Apply Sesame Oil over the warm leaf and put it over the affected areas.
Mix 1 teaspoon of Ashwagandha root powder in one glass of milk. Drink it daily in the morning.
Use Bay leaves daily in your diet.
Tinospora Cordifolia can be used with Ghee.
Gently massage over the painful areas with Malkangani Oil daily. It provides relief from severe pain in joints.
Gently massage with Fennel Essential Oil on the affected areas. Repeat the process two times a day.
Rooibos is a rich source of minerals like Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium and Fluoride. These minerals are required to maintain a good bone health. These minerals repair the damaged bones and prevents the risk of Osteoporosis and Arthritis. Fluoride is good to maintain dental hygiene.

Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of Ginger and Turmeric powder in 2 cups of water. Boil it on medium flame for 10 to 12 minutes. Let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain well. Add honey for taste and drink twice a day.

Dilute 9 drops of Lemon Essential Oil in 30 ml Castor Oil. Mix them well and then apply this mixture on the painful joints. Then, soak a cotton cloth in Castor Oil and cover your joints with it. Strain off this decoction. Add a teaspoon of Lemon ( Nimboo ) juice in it. Drink a half cup of this decoction daily to get rid off Arthritis.

Take 30 drops of Fennel Essential Oil, 16 drops of Cypress Essential Oil and 10 drops of Juniper Essential Oil. Mix them well and keep it aside. Add two handfuls of Epsom Salt and one handful of Rock Salt to the bathtub followed by four drops of the oil blend prepared before. Soak the affected area in this solution for 15 minutes. Cover it with bandage. Keep it for 5-7 hours. The best way is to to apply at night and leave it overnight. Wash it off with water in the morning. Do it for 5-7 days.
