Taking Arjuna or Camellia Sinensis is recommended during High Blood Pressure. If you are taking these herbal remedies to control your raised blood pressure, then, you should stop consuming Antihypertensive medicines. As Antihypertensive drugs will dangerously double the effect of herbal medicines and will result in serious complications. Modern medicines have two unwanted effects as well:
1) Patients get dependent on such medicines.
2) These medicines are associated with the unwanted side effects such as:
Telmisartan : Cough, Rapid swelling of the facial skin, Muscle cramps, Hypersensitivity reactions, Low blood pressure, Vomiting, Bloating, Itching, and pain
Torsemide : Low blood sodium level, Fatigue, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Decreased blood volume, Headache, Nausea, Weakness, Abdominal pain, , Vomiting, Muscle spasms, Liver toxicity increased hepatic enzyme level, Increase of base/alkali in the blood, Constipation, Loss of appetite

Description

High Blood Pressure is a disease of the Metabolism.
The Heart is a vital Organ and the most hard working part of the body. It is like a small factory that pumps gallons of oxygen rich blood to all parts of the body. It collects deoxygenated Blood from the Body via Veins and the Veins deliver this deoxygenated Blood to the Lungs, where it gets oxygenated. Now, the Heart collects this oxygen rich Blood from the Lungs and supplies it to rest of the Body parts via Arteries. The human Heart is a muscular organ and divided into four chambers which are Right Atrium, Left Atrium and Right Ventricle, Left Ventricle. To pump the Blood, the Heart muscles contract and relax alternaly.

What is Blood Pressure?
The Heart beats and pumps the blood into the Blood Vessels. The muscles of the Heart contract to pump the blood into the Blood Vessels. Then they relax to fill the pump again. This exerts a force against the inner walls of the Blood vessels. The peak of the pumping action is called Systolic and the pressure that remains during the relaxation period is called diastolic. The two readings are known as Blood Pressure. Blood Pressure varies from person to person, time to time, mood to mood and even posture to posture, according to age, weight and height. The normal range of the Blood Pressure is 120/80. 120 is Systolic and 80 is Diastolic. When this balance is upset we generally say the patient has either high blood pressure, or low blood pressure. Medically called Hypertension or Hypotension. The difference between the two is called Pulse Pressure. The pressure is measured in terms of millimeters of mercury the pressure can support in a glass tube; (mmg). Blood pressure must always be studied in conjunction with the speed of the heart, the pulse, or, the number of times the heart beats in one minute. The normal is 72. This is not the end. There is one more co relation. The number of breaths you take in one minute. The normal is 18. You should breathe once for every 4 beats of the heart.
Tired. Do not give up. Its your heart. Other people do not have the time to tell you all this.
There are four possibilities of this imbalance
Both the upper and the lower readings rise in unison and the pulse pressure remains 40 mm. You are not in great danger and can go to the doctor for consultation. This is called EHT, Essential Hypertension.
• Only the upper reading rises. The difference between the two readings suddenly becomes very large without exercise. If for example the readings are 200/80. It means the pressure is too much for the arteries to bear. Any one of them may burst any time. You are in mortal danger. Lie down. Do not move. Call an ambulance and get admitted.
However, if this difference increases gradually with age, that’s normal.
• Both readings fall below normal and the pulse pressure is maintained at 40. Danger? Yes ! but not alarming.
• Pulse pressure falls below 40. Again there is great danger. Blood is not going to the head. Brain is deprived of oxygen. The brain is in danger. Lie down, call for a doctor or ambulance. Do not attempt to go to a doctor.
This page is devoted to High Blood Pressure. Low Blood Pressure is dealt with separately.
The causes are numerous and are beyond the scope of this portal. You are strongly advised to see a doctor, BEFORE you attempt to use any herb.
In the detailed uses given below an endeavor will be made to refer to a cause where possible.

What is Hypertension or High Blood Pressure?
High Blood Pressure is the pressure with which the blood courses through the arteries in the human body. It is measured by taking a reading when the artery is fully blocked (No blood flowing at all ) and when the blood starts flowing freely.
It is measured in mg of mercury. It has two readings the upper ( Systolic ) and the lower ( Diastolic ).
The normal readings are 120/80 .

Before understanding the High Blood Pressure you have to understand the following terms.

Systolic Pressure ( BP when the Heart beats ) : The meaning of Systole is contraction. With each Heart beat the Heart muscles get contract and the blood gets pushed into the Arteries ( Supply oxygen rich blood to the body organs ). The normal Systolic Pressure is 120. As we get old the Systolic Pressure increases because of stiffness in the Arteries.
Diastolic Pressure ( BP between the Heart beats ) : Diastolic Pressure is the lowest pressure which is followed by a systole. After contraction the Heart muscles relax between the beats. The pressure that remains in the arteries during this period is Diastolic Pressure. At this time the Aortic valve closes. It is only during this period that the coronary arteries (which are different from the rest of the arteries) are fed by fresh blood. (Only when the aortic valve closes) The normal Diastolic Pressure is 80. If the Diastolic reading is either high or low, it may be an indication of a physical disorder.

There is another thing which is very important other than the Blood Pressure and it is known as Pulse Pressure .

What is Pulse Pressure?
It is the difference between the Systolic and Diastolic Pressure. If we see Blood Pressure, its normal reading is 120/80. The difference between the two pressures is 40, which is considered as the Normal Pulse Pressure.
Effects of aging on Blood Pressure.
As we get old, the muscles and Blood vessels get weak. As a result, there may be fluctuation in the Blood Pressure. Until the age of 50 both of the Pressures i.e. Systolic and Diastolic increase together. After 50, the Systolic pressure goes up where as the Diastolic pressure goes downward. This leads to increase in the Pulse Pressure too, because it is the difference between the two pressures.
The High Blood Pressure may cause a number of other physical Disorders like, Stroke, Cardiac Failure and Heart Attack.

High Blood Pressure Classification
Primary Hypertension : It contributes to around 95% of all Hypertension cases. It has no known cause.
Secondary Hypertension : In this type of Hypertension the cause is known. The cause is generally a medical condition which affects the Kidneys, Heart, Arteries or Endocrine system.
Resistant Hypertension : Medications not having an effect on Hypertension.
Exercise Hypertension : Blood Pressure excessively high during a period of Exercise.

Hypertension is classified in stages in terms of Systolic and Diastolic Pressure
Normal : Systolic less than 120 mm Hg and Diastolic less than 80 mm Hg.
Prehypertension : Systolic between 120 and 139 mm Hg. Diastolic between 80 and 89 mm Hg.
Hypertension Stage I : Systolic between 140 and 159 mm Hg. Diastolic 90 and 99 mm Hg.
Hypertension Stage II : Systolic 160 mm Hg or greater. Diastolic 100 mm Hg or greater.

Isolated Systolic Hypertension ( Systolic high and Diastolic normal ) : The Systolic Blood Pressure goes above 140 mmHg and Diastolic Blood Pressure remains below 90 mmHg. It is attributed to Old age and more common in women than men. It affects the functioning of the Kidneys, Brain, Heart and or Eyes.
What causes Isolated Systolic Hypertension?
Aorta is an artery which carries oxygenated blood from Heart to the circulatory system. With aging, aorta loses elasticity and goes stiff. It leads to a rise in the pressure when the Heart beats and pumps the blood. This does not have an effect on the pressure when the Heart relaxes during Heart beats, so the Diastolic Pressure is not affected.
Conditions which raise the risk of Isolated Systolic
Hypertension
Stiffened Aorta
Obesity
High Cardiac output
Excessive Blood Sodium levels
Low calcium reserves in tissues
Reduced elastic capacity of blood vessels
Why is Isolated Systolic Hypertension harmful?
It increases the risk of
Stroke
Heart disease
Chronic kidney disease

Isolated Diastolic Hypertension ( Diastolic high and Systolic normal ) : The Diastolic Blood Pressure goes above 90 and Systolic Blood Pressure remains below 140 mmHg.
What Causes Isolated Diastolic Hypertension?
Obesity
Improper Diet
Smoking and Alcoholism
Sedentary Lifestyle
Why is Isolated Diastolic Hypertension harmful?
It doubles the risk of :
Stroke
Heart Attack
Heart Failure
Kidney Failure

Isolated Diastolic Hypotension ( Diastolic low and Systolic normal ) : It is a condition in which the Diastolic pressure drops below 60 mmHg and Systolic pressure remains normal. It gets harder for the blood to move in the arteries. The Heart has to work harder. The condition is mostly seen in age above 60.
What Causes Isolated Diastolic Hypotension?
Old Age
Stiff Arteries
Dehydration
Why is Isolated Diastolic Hypotension harmful?
It increase the risk of Stroke

If not treated properly, High Blood Pressure may cause increased workload on the Heart. The Heart has to work harder. This increases the risk of developing :
Heart Problems
Atherosclerosis
Kidney diseases
Kidney Failure
Coronary Artery disease
Arterial Aneurysm
Heart failure
Heart Attack
Blindness
Stroke
Angina
Death

Things that help in lowering the High Blood Pressure:
1. Exercise : When we do Exercise or we do Yoga, it opens all the channels of the body, this helps in improving the blood flow in the blood vessels and prevent the formation of plaque on the inner walls of the Arteries.
2. Eat Healthy, Stay Healthy : Oily, Junk food causes the deposition of plaque on the walls of the Arteries. Eating vegetables, Fruits, sprouted pulses and diary products. They are full of vitamins and nutrients that provide energy to our body.
3. Minerals : Eating minerals like Potassium , Magnesium and Calcium helps in lowering the Blood Pressure. It will lowers both the systolic and the diastolic readings.
4. Fish Oil : The studies have shown that Fish oil also helps in lowering Blood Pressure. But be careful. It may cause some side effects. Continue, if it suits you and stop consumption immediately if find some side effects.
5. Herbs :
Garlic : It is particularly effective in lowering the Blood Pressure in high systolic cases. The results may not be as effective in case of low systolic.

Things to Avoid:
Reduce the intake of Salt ( Sodium ).
Do not smoke or Drink. It raises the Blood Pressure and causes other physical disorders too.

Herbal Treatment For Healthy Soup

Modern medicine banks heavily on names of diseases and brands of medicines. In reality diagnosing the disease in its totality is difficult. It often affects more than one organ. The obsession of naming it has forced us to focus only on part of the problem. Most of the times we need to go to separate specialists to deal with parts of the same disease. It is therefore, prudent to consider the disease as a whole and treat it as such. Herbal treatment often aims for this target.
The first aim of healthy living is to eat and live healthy. Second we should focus on preventing disease. And, lastly if we do get ill, we should try for a whole body cure.
Fortunately there is a remedy for all the three stages. Let's call it 'The Health Soup'.
'The Health Soup' is made from ordinary vegetables as follows.
Collect the following vegetables.
500 gm Radish
250 gm Raddish leaves. Yes ! I mean that. Radish leaves. They have a function of their own, different than that of the radish.
250 gm Carrots
250 gm Burdock Root
5 Dried Shiitake (Mushrooms)
Do not peel or grate. Wash thoroughly. Cut them in small pieces. Put them in a large stainless steel pan. Add about 5 liters of water. Boil it. Lower heat to simmer. Simmer for two hours. Yes, you got it right, 2 hours. Cool. Strain. Store in a refrigerator.
Start with one cup daily. After few days, if all goes well, increase to two cups a day.
Result ! Considerable improvement in overall health.
Note 1. Use stainless steel or glass containers only, to avoid metal poisoning. Aluminum pots must not be used.
Note 2. Most of us are not really healthy. All of us are suffering from some sort of malaise. Even if we cannot put our finger on it. This soup will affect each person differently. Some temporary unwanted reactions are possible. Consider them to be reactions of the body to throw out the toxins. For example, the following symptoms may manifest at the start of the treatment.
Itchy skin, Eczema, Mild Diarrhea
Some rules of thumb to keep in mind when dealing with the reactions.
If you are not sick, no reactions.
If you are mildly sick, there will be mild reactions. More sick, more intense reactions.
If you are constitutionally weak expect strong reactions.
But do not give up. These reactions are an indication that you are on your way to recovery and health.

Dear Akash Dhiman

We would like to know the range of Blood Pressure readings. And is your father taking any specific medication for Blood Pressure?

And, to keep his BP to normal,

He should go through the following procedure for 20 days-

Take 10 drops of Tinospora Cordifolia ( Giloy ) in the morning and evening for 20 days.
Take 5 drops of Gymnema Sylvestre ( Gudmar ) before every meal.
You can buy a tincture of Tinospora Cordifolia ( Giloy ) and Gymnema Sylvestre ( Gudmar ) from a Homeopathic drug store.

Keep a check on his Blood Pressure readings. Do not panic, if the readings fall below the normal range.
`Decrease the dosage of allopathic medications, if he is taking any.

God Bless........

Dear Akash Dhiman

The Blood Pressure readings you have told seems to be quite ok. These Readings may be considered as a case of Prehypertension. More over Blood Pressure readings may vary on the basis of age and lifestyle. If your father is above 60 years of age then the readings you told are fine enough as a small increase in the blood pressure at this age is natural.
However it is always great to adapt a healthy lifestyle. Have a healthy diet and include light exercise like a walk in daily routine. This may help in serving the purpose.

With Regards

Dear Friends:

I am an avid reader of your site. It is a great public service. Here is the first question I submit.

I am 62, with normal weight, and except for isolated hypertension (147/85), in excellent health. I exercise regularly, eat well (plenty of fruits and vegetables). I try to control stress with regular meditation, but I have a stressful job (I teach). For years I have been experimented with herbs. I prepare my own tinctures (e.g., hawtorn berries, ginko, garlic, black cummin, celery seeds, sambong, and many others). Nothing seems to reduce my BP below these numbers. I have not tried arjuna yet. Can you suggest a regiment or new herbs to try. I will try anything, except the doctor’s pills. Thank you in advance for your kind attention.

Dear Naisha, For high Blood pressure, you can do the following: Take Tinospora Cordifolia tincture ( Commonly known as Giloy ). Take 5 drops in half a glass of water once in a day. Keep a check on the blood pressure reading while giving Giloy. It is effective in lowering blood pressure. Reduce the quantity to 3 if it is uncomfortable. As you have heart trouble already, be cautious while taking herbal or homeopathic medicines. Keep a regular check. Secondly, blood in the saliva is not normal. Get a thorough checkup done for this.

Dear Johnny, Your Blood Pressure is slightly above and is manageable. Physically, include a habit of exercise or walk daily. However, the super effective treat for High Blood Pressure is Tinospora Cordifolia herb ( Giloy ). You can use the homeopathic form of herb- Tinospora Cordifolia- Mother tincture. Take 2-3 drops in a glass of water. It is known to lower the rise in blood pressure. Or you can use the herb, make a decoction and take a cup in the day. However,Arjuna is good herb for Heart health.( Terminalia Arjuna )

- Arjuna bark powder- Take 1/2 teaspoon of Arjuna Bark powder for a month.
- Tinospora Cordifolia ( Giloy ) - Take 5 drops of Homeopathic tincture of the herb in a glass of water morning and evening for 15 days. Reduce the dosage to 2-3 in the beginning as you are already taking medication.
Keep a check on the Blood pressure readings after taking medication.
