Asthma is a disease of the Lungs.
It is a respiratory disease that inflames the airways and leaves the patient breathless.
When the victim comes in contact with a trigger it causes inflammation. As a result the air sacs swell and causes congestion. It give rise to Asthma Attack.
It produces sticky Mucus or Phlegm.
This makes it difficult for the air to pass through hence more difficult to breathe.

Causes of Asthma
The Asthma Triggers that can cause an attack are :
Dust Mites
Infections (Colds, Viruses, Flu, Sinus infections)
Cold Wind
Poor Digestion
Animal Dander
Food Allergies

The types of remedies that aid in curing Asthma are Anti-inflammatory and Bronchodilators (Bronchial relaxants).

Anti-inflammatory : These remedies HELP in the reduction of Swelling and Mucus production in the airways. This makes the airways less sensitive and, thus, less likely to react to Asthma triggers.
Anti-inflammatory herbs lead to lesser symptoms, better airflow, less sensitive airways, less airway damage, and fewer asthma attacks.

These herbs should be administered every day and may need to be taken for several weeks before they start to keep Asthma in check.

Bronchodilators : These remedies relax the muscle bands that tighten around the airways. It opens the airways. Thus, allows more air in and out of the lungs.
Bronchial relaxants help clear mucus from the lungs. As a result, Asthma attacks can be avoided OR controlled.

Materia Medica for Asthma

Asthma General

Asthma is a chronic and recurring disease of Lungs and Airways. It affects around 300 million people worldwide and claims approximately 255,000 lives every year. A person suffering from this Chronic Respiratory condition is called Asthmatic. When we breathe, air passes from nose or mouth into the windpipe, then through the airways into the lungs and finally backwards. Airways are tiny tubes that let the air pass in and out of the lungs during respiration. When Asthma attack occurs it tightens the muscles surrounding the airways, makes them swell, and leads to excessive production of mucus, thereby restricting the amount of air that can pass through the airways. Asthma attack may cause Breathing Problems, Cough, Chest Tightness and Wheezing. The effects of Asthma attack vary from person to person, they may be mild, moderate or severe. A severe Asthma attack may require emergency treatment for restoration of normal breath. Asthma attack can occur at any age, However, It is common in children below 5 years of age. It generally affects children with Low Birth Weight or those exposed to Tobacco Smoke.
Why certain people become Asthmatic is not clear. However, It is believed to be a result of Genetics and Environmental factors. Children of Asthmatic parents are at higher risk of developing Asthma. If both the parents are Asthmatic then children have a greater chance of developing Asthma in comparison to only one parent being Asthmatic. If a person is genetically prone to develop allergic disorders like Allergic Rhinitis, Hayfever, Asthma, Atopic Eczema and certain food Allergies, he is said to be an Atopic. This tendency can be passed from parents to children. However, only the tendency of being Allergic gets passed, the substance to which the children and parent are Allergic might be different. Allergy can be caused by environmental substances like Dust Mites, Mold, Pollen, Animal Dander or Cockroach Debris and some types of Viral infections like Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Parainfluenza Virus. When an Asthmatic person comes in contact with these environmental factors the Immune system recognizes them as harmful foreign bodies and fights against them resulting in an Asthma attack.
Substances like Paint Fumes, Chemicals, Vapors, Gases, Smoke and Aerosol Sprays present at the work place may trigger Asthma attack in a person, this condition is known as Occupational Asthma. Exercise can also trigger Asthma attack, especially Exercise performed in cold air. This form of Asthma is referred to as Exercise Induced Asthma. When a person experiences only Dry Cough that lasts for more than 6 to 8 weeks and rest of the symptoms like Wheezing, Shortness of Breath and Chest Tightness are missing, this condition is referred to as Cough Variant Asthma or CVA. Asthma attack occurring at night is known as Nocturnal Asthma. Its symptom typically appear and are worse between 2AM and 4AM. It may be caused due to various factors like exposure to Allergens in the Bedroom, delayed Allergic response to exposure generally after 6 to 8 hours, cooling of Airways as a result of decrease in the body temperature.

Dealing with Asthma Asthma cannot be cured but it can be prevented or controlled. The key is to know the conditions that trigger Asthma attack and avoid them. Following alternative treatments may be beneficial in Asthma.

Herbs like Ginkgo Biloba, Ephedra, Agarwood may provide relief in Asthma.
