When a person catches cold, the mucus builds up in the Lungs. The excessive accumulation of mucus causes difficulty in breathing and Chest Congestion.

Materia Medica for Chest Congestion

Chest Congestion General

A regimen for Chest Congestion
Early morning take half a teaspoon of freshly ground Black Pepper with one teaspoon honey. The combination dries phlegm.
After two hours take a cup of ginger tea. Acts to loosen the mucus.
After two hours take a cup of liquorice tea. Liquorice is an expectorant.
Dab a few drops of Eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief and smell throughout the day. The real decongestion agent.
Repeat the above regimen once more during the day. Ginger and Liquorice need repetition every four hours to maintain their level in the body.
At night, before sleeping drink a cup of Turmeric milk. Remember. Turmeric is fat soluble only. It does not dissolve in milk. Therefore, heat ghee (Clarified Butter), add half a teaspoon of Turmeric, when fully dissolved, add milk, heat again and drink. Milk should not be too hot. Don't like the taste. Add a little sugar.
In two days this regimen should clear the chest.
Single Herb

Galangal for Chest Congestion

Soak some crushed rootstock in a pot of drinking water. Drink after adding honey whenever feel thirsty..

Cassia Indigo for Chest Congestion

Make a paste of the root of Cassia Indigo. Apply over the chest for 15-20 minutes. Wash it off. Use once a day.

Balm of Gilead for Chest Congestion

Take buds of Gilead Tree and boil in some water. Inhale the steam by covering your face with a towel. It gives a sigh of relief in chest congestion.

Turkey Berry for Chest Congestion

Roast 5 to 6 Turkey Berry in Ghee. Powder them. Take 1/4 teaspoon thrice a day.

Evening Primrose for Chest Congestion

Boil 2 tablespoons rootstock of Evening Primrose in One cup of water for 10-15 minutes. Drink lukewarm.

Eucalyptus ( Safeda ) Oil for Chest Congestion

Add few drops of Eucalyptus ( Safeda ) Oil in a cup of boiling water. Inhale the steam.

Nut Grass as Immunity Booster

Grind tuber of Nut Grass to make a paste. Add 1 tsp of it in a glass of Milk. Boil. Drink once a day.

Biophytum for Chest Congestion

Crush whole plant of Biophytum. Extract its juice. Mix 1 tsp of the juice with same quantity of Honey. Take it twice a day.

Indian Borage for Bronchitis

Drink 10 ml leaf decoction of Indian Borage once a day.

Turmeric ( Haldi ) for Chest Congestion

Mix half teaspoon Turmeric ( Haldi ) with Honey ( Shehad ). Take it with one glass of lukewarm milk.

Brown Mustard ( Lal Sarson ) Seeds for Chest Congestion

Grind Brown Mustard ( Lal Sarson ) Seeds. Add water to make a paste. Apply it on chest and bandage.

Yerba Santa as an Expectorant

Take a cup of boiling water.
Put One tablespoon crushed leaves in it and steep for 10 minutes.
Strain and drink Luke warm.

Horseradish for Chest Congestion

Prepare a paste of Horseradish flour with water. Apply it over chest for 15 minutes. It relieves in congestion problem.

Liquorice ( Mulethi ) for Chest Congestion

Liquorice gives a soothing effect to the Lungs and Bronchi.
Take One tablespoon dried Liquorice root. Boil it in a cup of water. Strain.
Drink as a tea twice a day.

Bitter Gourd ( Karela ) for Chest Congestion

Boil 10 g root of Bitter Gourd ( Karela ) with 50 ml water. Take 5 ml twice a day.

Black Pepper ( Kali Mirch ) for Chest Congestion

Mix half tablespoon Black Pepper ( Kali Mirch ) powder in a glass of lukewarm water. Drink twice a day.
Apply the leaf paste of Adiantum Capillus Veneris ( Hansraj ) on the chest. Leave covered for 2-3 hours. Take a warm water bath.

Yarrow Essential Oil for Chest Congestion

Yarrow Essential Oil helps to lessen the congestion. It also helps to hurl out the phlegm and give instant relief.
Put 5 to 8 drops of Yarrow Essential Oil in a litre of boiling water. Breathe in the steam for 5 minutes. It gives you good relief from congestion.
OR : Add 10 drops of Yarrow Essential Oil in a teaspoon of Olive oil. Slightly warm the mixture. Rub it over chest, throat and back at night. Cover them. It makes you easy to breathe.
Note : continue the process until the problem persists.

Pine Essential Oil for Chest Congestion

Pine Essential Oil acts as an expectorant. This property helps to remove excess mucus and clears the airways. It soothes the throat and treats Chest Congestion.
Add 4 to 5 drops of Pine Essential Oil in any Carrier Oil. Mix well. Apply it on the Chest, Back and Feet. Do this daily for a week.

Oregano Essential Oil for Chest Congestion

Oregano Essential Oil has strong Antimicrobial property. This property helps to fight infection and clears up the respiratory tract. This helps to treat Chest Congestion.
Add 3 to 4 drops of Oregano Essential Oil in a glass of water. Have it twice a day.
OR : Mix 10 to 12 drops of Oregano Essential Oil in 6 teaspoons of any carrier oil ( such as Jojoba Oil ). Apply this Oil blend on the chest and gently massage.
OR : Add 2 to 3 drops of Oregano Essential Oil in a bowl of hot water. Inhale its steam.

Rosemary Essential Oil for Chest Congestion

Put 5 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil to a vaporizer. Let its perfume spread into the room. The volatile organic compounds in Rosemary Essential Oil has antibacterial property.

Cinnamon ( Dalchini ) for Chest Congestion

Put 1 Cinnamon ( Dalchini ) stick in a 1/4th cup of boiling water. Simmer it for 20 minutes. Strain off this decoction. Drink it daily to remove mucus from the lungs for better breathing during Chest Congestion.

Peppermint for Chest Congestion

Take a large pot filled with water. Boil it. Add Peppermint leaves in it. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the vapors for 15-20 minutes.
This remedy is helpful in case of acute Congestion.

Herbal Treatment For Chest Congestion 1

Take Catechu and Red Wood. Prepare a paste. Apply on the chest two times a day.

Herbal Treatment For Chest Congestion 2

Grind equal quantity of Turkey Berry ( Tint in India ), Carom ( Ajvayan in India ), Indian Gooseberry ( Aamla in India ), Curry Leaf ( Karipatta in India ), Fenugreek ( Methi in India ) , Ginger ( Adrak in India ), Mango ( Aam in India ) kernel and Pomegranate ( Anar in India ) rind. Fry them in little Ghee. Take 1/4 teaspoon twice a day with milk.

Herbal Treatment For Chest Congestion 3

Take one teaspoon Carom ( Ajvain ) and one teaspoon Turmeric ( Haldi ). Boil in a cup of water. Cool. Add 2 teaspoons Honey ( Shehad ). Have 2 teaspoons thrice a day.

Herbal Treatment For Chest Congestion 4

Take a bowl of boiling water.
Add 4-5 drops of each-
Aniseed Oil ( Choti Saunf ), Eucalyptus Oil ( Safeda ), Fennel Oil ( Saunf ), Cardamom Oil ( Choti Ilaichi ), Peppermint Oil( Vilayati Pudina ), Angelica Oil ( Choraka Bheda ), Juniper Oil ( Aaraar ) and Hyssop Oil ( Jufa ).
Inhale the aromatic smell.
OR : Make a blend of all these oil with any massage oil and rub on the chest.

Herbal Treatment For Chest Congestion 5

Mix half tablespoon of dried Yarrow and Golden Seal.
Boil in a cup of water for 5-7 minutes.
Drink warm.
It works as a very good decongestant.

Herbal Treatment For Camphor Essential Oil For Chest Congestion

Camphor Essential oil is a good Herbal treatment to reduce Chest Congestion. Heat some Coconut Oil and add 3 to 4 pieces of Camphor into it. Make sure you off the Gas before the oil reaches its smoking point. Now apply this oil on Chest and Neck. It provides a sound Sleep and reduces Congestion associated with Cough and Cold.

My name is Ashish Rawat . I have been suffering from chest congestion for very long time. Sometimes I couldn't breath. I have gone to many doctors but nobody has finished this problems from roots . My friend told me that you can help me to get rid of this problem permanently. Kindly help me.

My suggestion to you is, try to drink warm water.
Have some Ginger tea 2 times in a day. Add some basil leaves too.
Have a cup of Green tea every day.
Join some yoga classes and do breathing exercise daily. Do it for at least 3 to 4 months on regular basis. It may help to clean your respiratory tract.

Hi there,
I have chest congestion for last 1 month and am coughing during mid day but later in the day it improves.
I have seen the regimen at the top and have some confusion. Its mentioned repeat ginger and licorice tea every 4 hours. And its also mentioned repeat the regimen once again in the day.
Shall I follow this regimen in the day :
Suppose i start at 8 AM in the morning: -
8AM - Black pepper
10AM Ginger tea
12AM licorice tea
2PM black pepper
4PM ginger tea
6PM licorice tea
10PM turmeric milk

Please confirm as i am suffering a lot and would liike to take this 2 day regimen on saturday and sunday.

We advise to follow the regimen.
1. Add a pinch of Black Pepper, 1 teaspoon of Ginger juice ( or 1 fresh ginger slice ) and Cinnamon to 1 teaspoon of Honey. Take this formula for 1 week.
2. Take Turmeric with a pinch of black pepper.
3. Take 1 teaspoon of Licorice 2 times in a day for 3 days only. Take it every week, but only for 3 days. Repeat it for 3 weeks only. 4. Take 4 to 5 Basil leaves for 15 days.
Do breathing exercise daily for 1 month.
