Description
Retinal Artery Occlusion is a disease of the Retina.
The condition in which there is blockage in one of the Arteries that carries blood to the Retina is known as Retinal Artery Occlusion.
The Retina is the picture maker which provides a clear image to the Brain. It is a light sensitive area located behind the Lens. It contains photosensitive cells which convert the light rays into impulses with the help of the optic nerve.
The Arteries carry oxygenated blood to the Retina. If there is any blockage in these Arteries, it may develop Retinal Artery Occlusion. As a result, the Retina fails to make a clear image in the Brain and causes a Blurred Vision.
Types of Retinal Artery Occlusion
Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion (BRAO)
Central Retinal Artery Occlusion (CRAO)
Causes of Retinal Artery Occlusion
Smoking
Diabetes
Glaucoma
Drugs Abuse
Macular Edema
Atherosclerosis
Cardiac Disease
High Cholesterol
High Blood Pressure
Carotid Artery Disease
Damage of Artery due to some physical disorder
If not treated properly, Retinal Artery Occlusion may cause
Blindness
Differential Diagnosis: If the occlusion occurs in the Arteries it is termed as Retinal Artery Occlusion. And if the occlusion occurs in the Veins, it is termed as Retinal Vein occlusion.
