Description
Retinal Vein Occlusion is a disease of the Retina.
The meaning of Occlusion is the blockage in the blood vessel or in any hollow organ. When there is occlusion in one of the Veins that carries blood to the Retina, it is termed as Retinal Vein Occlusion.
Retina is the picture maker. It is located behind the lens in the Eye. It is a light sensitive area. When the light enters the Cornea, the Lens focuses the light on the Retina. The Retina converts the light into impulses and send it to the Brain with the help of an Optic nerve. Now, a clear image is made in the Brain.
The Veins carry blood away from the organs to the Heart. The Heart pumps the Blood and the oxygen rich blood is supplied to the organs through Arteries. But if there is any kind of obstruction in the Veins that carry blood away from the Retina, it causes back flow of blood towards the Retina. As a result, it may cause swelling and bleeding. The possible symptom is Blurred Vision or distortion of the Vision.
Types of Retinal Vein Occlusion
Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion (BRVO) : It develops when there is blockage in one of the four veins that run to the Retina. People in the middle age ( around 40 ) and having Blood Pressure or Cholesterol problems are at the higher risk of occlusion. It develops in one eye and is caused by Arteriosclerosis.
Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) : It occurs all of sudden and is common in old age people. When the main retinal vein gets blocked, it is termed as Central Retinal Vein Occlusion.
Herbs which enhance the blood flow are beneficial for Retinal Vein Occlusion.
Causes of Retinal Vein Occlusion
Smoking
Diabetes
Glaucoma
Blood Clots
Macular Edema
Heart Problems
Atherosclerosis
High Cholesterol
High Blood Pressure
Any kind of Blood Disorders
If not treated properly, Retinal Vein Occlusion may cause
Blindness
Differential Diagnosis: Retinal Vein Occlusion is related with Veins. Where as Retinal Artery Occlusion is related with Arteries.
