Description

Meningitis is a disease of the Brain and the Spinal Cord.
The inflammation of meninges is Meningitis.
It is caused by Bacterial or Viral infections. It may also be caused by fungal or parasitic infections. It causes intense Headache and Fever.

The three protective membranes of the Brain and the Spinal Cord are
The Dura Mater
The Arachnoid
The Pia Mater
These layers are collectively termed as Meninges.

Types of Meningitis
Bacterial Meningitis : It is caused by bacterial infections. It has further three sub types.
Meningococcal Bacterial Meningitis : It is caused by Neisseria Meningitides.
Pneumococcal Bacterial Meningitis : It is caused by Streptococcus Pneumoniae. It affects babies most, because they have weak immune system.
The third type of Bacterial Meningitis is caused by Haemophilus Influenzae.

Viral Meningitis : It is caused by viruses. The Viruses include Enteroviruses, Herpes Simplex, Mumps and HIV.

The Bacterial infection is more serious than the viral infection. It causes permanent damage to the Brain and may cause Death.
