Spondylitis
Spondylitis or Ankylosing Spondylitis is also known by Marie Strumpell or Bechterew disease.
It is a severe form of arthritis that effects the Spine, Pelvis, Joints and other parts of the body.
It makes the bones to fuse and creates abnormal stiffness and immobility of the joints.
In its later and more progressive stages it may lead to complete fusion of bones in the spine and
result in a forward stooped posture or a Bamboo Spine. Chances of its occurrence are more
prominent in men, than women. The ratio of occurrence in men as compared to women is 3:1.
It generally affects young men between 20 and 35 years of age. In rarest of cases it may emerge
in an individual around 40 years in age, but chances are that might be a case of delayed diagnosis.
Genetics and Environmental factors play an important role in emergence of Ankylosing Spondylitis.
HLA-B27 is believed to have a vital role in triggering Ankylosing Spondylitis. HLA (Human leukocyte antigens)
is a protein found on the surface of white blood cells. It is this protein that helps the Immune system
of the body to distinguish between its own cells and foreign, harmful cells. Being a HLA-B27 positive
does not generally mean you will encounter Ankylosing Spondylitis. It only makes you more susceptible
towards encountering Ankylosing Spondylitis.
In the initial stages Ankylosing Spondylitis affects the Spine causing Lower Back Pain. Gradually, It is
accompanied by Morning Stiffness, Decreased Chest Expansion, Fatigue, Insomnia and Inflammation
of the Joints. Stiffness in Ankylosing Spondylitis is worst in the morning and after the periods of inactivity.
Stiffness decreases as the levels of activity rise during the course of the day. Ankylosing Spondylitis even
creates Inflammation within the Ribs and Chest which leads to a decreased Chest Expansion as compared
to normal. A person even experiences Sharp Pain within the Chest at the time of Chest Expansion.
Fatigue is a common problem in Ankylosing Spondylitis. Generally a person gets relief or feels refreshed
from fatigue after a good night's rest or by taking a break from the situation. Fatigue in Ankylosing Spondylitis
is a result of various factors, namely Inflammation, Sleep disturbances due to Pain, Weakness of Muscles and
Painful Joints, so even rest or break from the situation might not be helpful. Ankylosing Spondylitis causes
acute pain within the body. It may give u sleepless nights resulting into Insomnia. Pain related to Ankylosing
Spondylitis worsens with rest or periods of immobility. The more you remain inactive, the more pain you are
going to face. If not treated, Ankylosing Spondylitis may create inflammation within the Eyes resulting into
Uveitis. In rarest of cases Ankylosing Spondylitis even develops a complication named, Amyloidosis. Cells
within the bone marrow produce a protein called Amyloid. A body suffering from Amyloidosis will build
Amyloids in other organs such as Liver, Heart and Kidneys and may result in various other symptoms like
Shortness of Breath, Loss of Weight, Numbness of Hands or Feets, Edema. Prolonged Ankylosing Spondylitis
increases the chances of encountering Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a complicated disease of the bones.
It decreases the bone strength and make them so weak, thus making you vulnerable towards a Spinal Fracture.
