Description

High Pulse Pressure is a disease of the Nerves and the Arteries.
When the blood flows in the blood vessels, it exerts pressure in the blood vessels. This pressure is known as Blood Pressure. It is measured in two readings.
The top reading and the bottom reading. The top reading is called Systolic Blood Pressure and bottom reading is called Diastolic blood Pressure.
When the heart muscles contract they exert pressure on the blood vessels. This pressure is called Systolic Blood Pressure. It is the maximum pressure that is exerted.
The minimum pressure that is exerted on the Blood Vessels is Diastolic Blood Pressure. It occurs when the muscles get relaxed.
Both, the Systolic and the Diastolic Pressure increase with age, up to 20/30 years. But in old age, Systolic increases and Diastolic decreases. The cause may be stiffing 0f the arteries.
Normal reading of blood pressure is 120/80mm Hg.
The difference between the Systolic (top) and Diastolic Blood Pressure (bottom) is known as Pulse Pressure. The ideal Pulse Pressure is 40mm Hg. When it exceeds 40 mm Hg, consider it a warning. When it exceeds beyond 60 consider it an emergency. This is not a warning, it is a threat, a heart attack is on the way. Call it High Pulse Pressure.
A High Pulse Pressure is a danger signal, irrespective of the two readings. By itself a systolic reading of 130 may not be too high, but couple it with a diastolic reading of say, 60 and you have a perfect picture of an impending stroke.
Conversely, if the readings are 200/160, the pulse pressure is 40 and hence a lessor danger. If no cause can be assigned, it is probably a case of Essential Hypertension. Precisely, as the name suggests, it is essential for a person to live.
Diabetes and Pulse Pressure . In diabetic patients, a High Pulse Pressure may develop irrespective of the age of the person, irrespective of the two readings of the Blood Pressure. Example, Readings of 120/40 means danger.
Old Age and Pulse Pressure . As man advances in age, hardening and constriction of the arteries is inevitable. Consequently, the systolic reading increases and the diastolic reading decreases. This snowballs into a High Pulse Pressure, multiplying the risk of a stroke.
When combating the disease it is far better to try to reduce the Systolic reading than to increase the Diastolic.

Causes of High Pulse Pressure
Anemia
Anxiety
Diabetes
Heart Blockage
Hyperthyroidism
Atherosclerosis
Stiffening of the Arteries

If not treated properly, High Pulse Pressure may cause
Sudden Death
Heart Attack

Note : If your blood pressure exceeds 160/100 mm Hg, it is an emergency alarm. Lie down, even if you are on the road and call an ambulance.
