Description

Trismus is a disease of the Mouth and the Jaw. It is a medical term for a tonic contraction of the muscles of chewing. When Tetnus affects the face. The jaw gets locked and it is called Lock Jaw.
The restriction in the opening of the mouth may cause problems in eating,impaired speech and or compromised oral hygiene.

Differential Diagnosis : Tetanus is a bacterial infection which attacks the Nervous System. It causes contractions of the Muscles of the Jaws and the Neck. Trismus is the problem of the Muscles and the leading symptom is locked jaw. The patient may have difficulty in opening the Mouth. It is a result of some disease or a surgical procedure. No bacteria are involved.
In Paresthesia the Nerves get affected due to which, the movement of the jaw is impaired. That is a consequence of paralysis. In this, the jaw does not get locked but a tingling sensation is there in the jaw.

Herbal Treatment For Trismus : Patra Pinda Potli Massage

In India, the Ayurvedic name of the massage is Pattarpind Potli Massage and Patra Pinda Sweda Massage . It used to cure Trismus. Since Trismus is a spasm of the muscles, it is best treated by a massage.
The method in detail is as follows
Ingredients :
Sodom ( Ark in India ) : 5 to 6 leaves
Castor ( Arandi in India ) : 7 to 8 leaves
Marijuana ( Bhang in India ) : 15 leaves
Chaste Berry ( Nirgundi in India ) : 15 leaves
Datura Stramonium ( Dhatura in India ) : 10 leaves
Garlic ( Lehsun in India ) : 3 to 4 cloves
Turmeric ( Haldi in India ) : 2 teaspoons
Castor Oil ( Arandi Ka Tel in India ) : 100 ml
Brown Mustard ( Lal Sarson in India ) : 1 teaspoon
Fenugreek Seeds ( Methi Dana in India ) : 1 teaspoon
Mahanarayan Oil ( Mahanarayan Thailam in India ) : 1 litre
Dhanwantharam Oil ( Dhanwantharam Thailam In India ) : 1 litre
Preparations :
Wash the leaves and chop them.
Fry these leaves for 5 to 10 minutes with the suggested quantity of Garlic ( Lehsun in India ) , Turmeric ( Haldi in India ), Castor Oil ( Arandi Ka Tel in India ), Brown Mustard ( Lal Sarson in India ), Fenugreek Seeds ( Methi Dana in India ) in 100 ml of Castor Oil ( Arandi Ka Tel in India ).
Place this prepared mixture on a cotton cloth and make a bolus with a handle.
Heat 250 ml of both Dhanwantharam Oil and Mahanarayan Oil together in a frying pan.
Place the bundle in the frying pan and heat it moderately for 1 to 2 minutes.
It should be bearable to your hand.
Method :
Heat your palm with the bundle and use that palm to heat the area of the jaw for 10 to 15 second.
Repeat till the bolus becomes a little less hot and can be applied directly to the face.
Tap and rub the bolus on the whole side of the face.
During this procedure keep exercising the jaw by opening and closing it.
Move the lower jaw from side to side. When the bolus become cool, reheat in the oil.
Repeat for 15 minutes. Relax for 30 minutes.
Wash face with soap and warm water.
Regularly do Patra Pinda Potli Massage one time a day for 4 to 5 days.
Note : Kindly do this treatment in the care of a Panchakarma Technician.

I am suffering from radiation fibrosis in what is left of my palette due to sinus cancer, surgery and treatment. It is becoming more swollen and causing pressure and dizziness. It is also causing radiation necrosis that the doctors are reluctant to do surgery on. i have had 2 rounds of hyper baric treatment and have exposed bone. I also have severe trismus in my jaw and do stretches daily without improvement. I am interested in any herbal treatment that might help Thank you

I would love to try that Patra Pinda Potli massage mentioned above.

One of my family member has head and neck cancer and now she doesn't have any problems but its 10 month but still she can't open her mouth as before trismus is mention in her report pls tell something for her mouth opening

Hello Mansi. I understand your stress. I suggest going with massage therapy as it helps in regulating the contractions causing Lock Jaw. Homeopathic medicines are effective to treat Trismus. Kindly check with a Homeopathic doctor at earliest.
