Thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland and is a part of Endocrine Gland. It is located at the base of the neck, just below the Adam's apple. It secretes thyroid hormones to regulate the metabolism of the body.
The production of thyroid hormone is controlled by the Pituitary gland and the Hypothalamus.
When the system is impaired the production of thyroid hormones either increases or decreases.
The two Hormones of Thyroid which are T3 and T4 play a very important role in metabolic activities. That is why the production of these two hormones are should be in a normal level.
The Thyroid Gland may malfunction in many ways. Each type of malfunction is dealt with separately under the following heads
Hypothyroidism : Inadequate production of the thyroid hormones.
Hyperthyroidism : Overactive thyroid gland produces excessive thyroid hormones.
Goiter : Whether the production of thyroid hormones is low or high, both conditions give rise to Goiter. It causes enlargement of the thyroid gland.
Graves Disease : The overproduction of thyroid hormones gives rise to Graves Disease.
Thyroiditis : It is the inflammation of the Thyroid Gland.
