Description
Celiac Disease is a disease of the Whole Body, specially of the intestines.
It is an Autoimmune Disorder. In Celiac Disease you become allergic to cereals like Wheat, Barley, Oats or Rye. The underlying reason is that the body is not able to process and digest gluten. Gluten occurs naturally in these cereals.
The exact cause of this disease remains unknown, but it is known that the villi ( Tiny finger like projections in the intestines that absorb nutrients ) get damaged because of the reaction with gluten. The damage to the villi can affect the body's ability to absorb all the nutrients. No matter how much a person eats, they remain malnourished. Though this disease has some genetic linkage, people may develop it at any point in their life. It is possible for infants to be born with this disease and some people develop it in late adulthood.
Gluten is a protein. It is present in most food products. When it is not digested by the body it causes Celiac Disease. A person becomes intolerance to Gluten. It causes damage to the Digestive Tract.
There is a tread like structure present on the inner lining of the Small Intestines called Villi. The Villi helps to absorb the Nutrients and minerals from the digested food. In Celiac Disease the Immune System damages the villi and the body fails to absorb the Nutrients.
