Description
Fluorosis is a disease of the Teeth and Bones.
The excessive ingestion of fluoride that affects Teeth and the Skeletal System of the body is Fluorosis.
Dental Fluorosis : The consumption of too much fluoride may develop Dental Fluorosis. At the age of 8 years the permanent teeth are fully developed. Normal levels of Fluoride is not a problem. Fluoride decreases the risk of tooth decay. However, The high levels of Fluoride cause brittle teeth. If you see dark splotches on the teeth, that indicates of Dental Fluorosis. It increases the risk of developing Cavities.
Skeletal Fluorosis : The depletion of excess fluoride in the bones causes debilitating Bones. It is termed as Skeletal Fluorosis. It may be caused by frequent drinking of tea or water that contain high levels of Fluoride. Normally, the kidneys excrete the extra amount of fluoride from the body. But if it is in high content, then they fail to do so. As a result the fluoride gets deposited in the bones in crystal form. It causes weak bones and Joint Pain. The bones become hard and causes stiffness. It decreases the elasticity of the bones hence causing limited joint movement. Skeletal fluorosis is difficult to detect because the symptoms of other diseases are same to that of Skeletal Fluorosis. Prolong Skeletal Fluorosis may cause Neurological disorders and muscle waste.
