Description
Thrombophlebitis is a disease of the Veins.
The formation of Blood Clots that causes inflammation in the Veins is Thrombophlebitis. It causes Swelling and discoloration of the Skin.
There are two types of Veins in the Body.
Superficial Veins : Veins that are present near the surface and are not deep inside. They are easily visible under the Skin. When the body temperature rises the deep veins send blood to the Superficial Veins. They help to cool the body temperature. If Thrombophlebitis occurs in these Veins then it is known as Superficial Thrombophlebitis.
Deep Veins : Deep Veins are located deep inside the body. They are associated with an Artery. It may be life threatening. The clot may break off from its site and may travel to the Heart, Brain, Lungs and the other Body parts. This is known as Deep Venous Thrombosis. It is dealt with separately on this portal.
