Description
Hyperprolactinemia is a disease of the Pituitary Gland and the Prolactin Hormone.
The over production of Prolactin Hormone by the Pituitary Gland is Hyperprolactinemia.
The Pituitary Gland is the master Gland and regulates a number of Hormones. The Prolactin Hormone is secreted by the posterior part of the Pituitary Gland and get stored in the Vesicles. Prolactin is released into the Bloodstream after pregnancy for milk production. The process of releasing Prolactin into the Bloodstream is known as Excocytosis. In the Bloodstream, the production of Prolactin is regulated by the Dopaminergic System. The Dopamine is produced by the Hypothalamus. The whole process stimulates the milk production in the Breast. During pregnancy, the level of Prolactin is high but excessive production of Prolactin gives rise to Hyperprolactinemia.
Functions of the Prolactin Hormone
Regulates the Metabolism.
Regulated the Body fluids.
Regulates the Immune System.
Is is known as a Milk producer.
Stimulates the Mammary Glands to produce milk after pregnancy.
Helps in the development of the Breast during Pregnancy.
The reason of Hyperprolactinemia may be Hormonal imbalance or Benign Tumors of the Pituitary Gland. The level of Prolactin increases in the Blood than the normal level. This leads to Hyperlactation, Menstrual Problems and Galactorrhea.
