Central Serous Retinopathy is a disease of the Eyes.
When a fluid builds up under the Retina and results in blurred and distorted vision it is termed as Central Serous Retinopathy.
The eyes are the most beautiful part of the human body through which we are able to see the beauty of this world. Eyes are designed to see far or near objects with a clear vision. But when something goes wrong with the Eyes, it may cause blurred vision, weak Eyesight, Distorted Vision and many more problems.
Structure and Functions of the Eye An Eye consists of the Cornea, Iris, Pupil, Lens Retina, Choroid and Optic Nerve. When we see an object the light directly falls on the Cornea. The cornea refracts this light onto the Lens. The Iris adjusts the amount of light that has to be sent to the Lens. Then the Lens focuses the light onto the Retina. With the help of an optic Nerve the Retina makes an image in the Brain.
What happens in Central Serous Retinopathy? In Central Serous Retinopathy the problem occurs with the Retina. There is an accumulation of fluid under the Retina. This fluid leaks from the Blood vessels of Choroid ( the outer layer of the Eye ). This may result in blurred and distorted vision, as the Retina fails to make a clear image. It may develop gradually or occurs all of a sudden. It may occur in one or both eyes.
Causes of Central Serous Retinopathy The actual reason is not known, however a defect in the Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) is believed to be one of the reasons. Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) is a thin layer of tissues that is present between the Retina and the Choroid.
A few possible causes of CSR are listed below Drug Abuse Hormonal Imbalance : The adrenal gland located at the top of the Kidneys secretes a Cortisol Hormone. This hormone helps in cooling the effects of stress. However, the high levels of Cortisol may cause
Cushing's Syndrome . Few people with Cushing's Syndrome have been observed as suffering from CSR as well.
Stress : Physical or Mental stress may increase the risk of developing CSR.
Kidney Disorders : People with kidney problems are at higher risk of getting Retina Problems.
Medications : Anti allergic Medicines are taken for other illness may contain steroids, that may develop CSR.
If not treated properly, Central Serous Retinopathy may cause Permanent damage to the Retina.
