Description
Polycythemia Vera is a disease of the Bone Marrow.
When the Bone marrow produces abnormal number of Blood Cells it is Polycythemia Vera.
Bone Marrow is a soft tissue present in the center of the Bones. It produces Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells and Platelets. The Blood Cells are produced in a regular manner. But in Polycythemia Vera the Bone Marrow becomes overactive and produces an abnormally large number of Blood Cells. This makes the Blood more thick and Blood Circulation becomes slow. It may lead to Thrombosis.
The cause for Polycythemia Vera may be mutated JAK2 gene. JAK2 produces a protein that helps in the multiplication and development of the Blood Cells. But when mutation occurs, JAK2 produces protein in excess. This results in the overproduction of Blood Cells. The Blood becomes thick and flows slowly in the Arteries and Veins. This leads to lack of oxygen in parts of the Body and causes Blood Clots.
If not treated properly, Polycythemia Vera may cause
Gout
Blood Clots
Heart Attack
Stomach Ulcers
Spleen Enlargement
