Genital Herpes is disease of the Genitals.
It is caused by Herpes Simplex virus.
It is a contagious disease and spreads through sexual contact. A condom is NOT a protection.
Genital Herpes causes sores and blisters on and or around the Genitals.
There are two types of Herpes Viruses, Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and Herpes simplex Virus 2.
Genital Herpes may be caused by both. However Most genital herpes is caused by infection of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) normally manifests itself as cold sores or fever blisters. But may cause Genital Herpes.
Genital herpes may not exhibit any symptoms. It is still contagious.
Having entered the host, through the skin, it travels along nerve paths. It may lie dormant indefinitely. But, it may become active any time your immune system is down.
Symptoms may occur immediately on contact, after some time or not at all.

Can you prevent contracting it ? Yes.
Is a condom any use ? No
Do attacks reoccur ? Yes. approx 4 to 5 times a year. As the body develops antigens the attacks become less severe and come after longer periods.
