Description
Pott's Disease is a disease of the Spine. It is a type of Tuberculosis of the Skeletal System. It occurs in Thoracic or Upper Spine. It causes severe curve in the upper Spine. It occurs outside the Lungs. It is a kind of Tuberculosis Arthritis of the Intervertebral Joints of the Spine.
Cause of Pott's Disease :
Pott's Disease is a form of Tuberculosis. It is caused by the inhalation of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (Mtb) bacteria. Mtb bacteria causes Tuberculosis in the Lungs. When this infection spreads from the Lungs to the Spine via Blood, it causes Tuberculosis of the Spine. The bacteria Mtb causes infection in the Spine. It leads to Spine Arthritis. If the two contiguous joints of the Spine become infected, the disc of cartilage between them cannot receive the required nutrients. This damages the disc. The disc then collapses leading to Spinal Cord damage.
If not treated properly, Pott's Disease may lead to
Spiral Tuberculosis
Severe Bone deformity
Damage the Nerves and even causes Paralysis
