Adrenal Dysfunction General
Human body consists of two Adrenal glands, also called Suprarenal glands. They are situated at the back part of the Abdomen, above the upper end of each Kidney. These are small triangular shaped glands.
Each Adrenal gland has two parts:
An external cortex or Cortical: It produces the steroid hormones
An inner Medulla: func.
Adrenal glands produce Adrenaline and steroid hormones: Aldosterone and Cortisol. The hormones secreted by the glands regulate Metabolism, Immunity system, Blood Pressure, Body's response to Stress and Sex hormones. The dysfunction of Adrenal glands causes excess or insufficient production of hormones that affect the whole body.
The Cortical or Adrenal cortex secretes Corticosteroids. The Corticosteroid contains three types of steroid hormones:
1. Mineralocorticoids (Aldosterone, Deoxycorticosterone)
2. Glucocorticoids (Cortisol, Corticosterone)
3. Androgens, Estrogens and Progestin
The Medullary or Adrenal Medulla secretes Catecholamine hormone. The Catecholamine contains two types of hormones:
1. Adrenaline (Epinephrine)
2. Noradrenaline (Norepinephrine)
Hyper secretion of Adrenal gland: When excess or high amount of Adrenocortical hormone is produced by Adrenal glands, it causes:
* Release of excess of Glucocorticoid
* Excess Cortisol is released from Adrenal cortex
Role of ACTH
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is released by the Pituitary gland. ACTH stimulates the release of Cortisol from the cortex (outer part) of the adrenal gland. Diseases are classified on the basis of ACTH as:
ACTH dependent:
* Cushing Disease (ACTH- Secreting Pituitary Tumor)
* Ectopic ACTH Syndrome (Nonpituitary ACTH-secreting neoplasm)
* Iatrogenic
ACTH Independent:
* Adrenal Adenoma
* Adrenal Carcinoma
Hypo secretion of Adrenal gland: When low or insufficient Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is produced, it may cause:
* Addison's Disease
* Pituitary/ Hypothalamic Disease
Cause of Adrenal Dysfunction
The common causes for diseases related to Adrenal glands are:
1. Weak Immune System causing Autoimmune Diseases
2. Tuberculosis
3. Polyglandular deficiency
4. Bilateral Adrenalectomy
5. Periodic
6. Adrenal Infections
7. Hemochromatosis
8. Amyloid
9. Lymphomas
