Side Effects, Risk Factors of, and Cautions for Comfrey

Avoid use during Pregnancy, Breast Feeding If you are pregnant and is a nursing mother than avoid use of Comfrey. It may cause some birth defects in your child, It may damage his Liver and may develop Cancer.
Although comfrey is a good but long term use may cause some side effects. It may cause allergic reactions such as Hives, Congestion in Throat, Swelling on Face, Lips, Mouth and Tongue or Difficulty in breathing.
Liver Damage : Some cases of Liver Damage are associated with excess use of Comfrey. This results in yellow Eyes, Dark Urine and Skin.
It may cause Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal Pain, Fatigue, Clay Colored Stools and Loss of Appetite.
Avoid direct use on broken skin. It may cause some other complications.

Comfrey General

Comfrey is a perennial herb of the Boraginaceae family. It is mainly grown in Europe and parts of North America.
It has many varieties. Symphytum X Uplandica is a hybrid of Comfrey.
Comfrey species are toxic in nature. However, Symphytum Officinale is considered to be the least toxic and used for medicinal purposes.
It is beneficial for Skin problems like Wounds, Acne, Psoriasis, Eczema and Sunburns. It soothes the skin and reduces Skin irritation. It is used to treat minor injuries as it enhances the regeneration of cells.

Decoction: Make a tea.
Put l/2 teaspoonful of the powdered root or leaves in a cup of water. Boil it. Simmer for l0 minutes. Drink three times a day.

Comfrey for Eczema

Allantoin and Vitamin A are the chief nutrients of Comfrey which counter Eczema. Allantoin keeps the skin soft and even. Vitamin A is a potent Antioxidant which cures itching and dryness of the skin.
Use decoction of Comfrey plant to wash the affected area. Do it 2 to 3 times a day.

Comfrey for Fracture

Prepare a tea made from the roots of Comfrey. Take 2-3 times a day.

Comfrey for Facial Neuralgia

Take Comfrey extract. Put 4 to 5 drops on cotton pad. Keep in that ear which is at the painful side of the face.
Add 2 teaspoons of Comfrey leaves into a cup of hot water. Cover it and Let it steep for 25 minutes. Stain it off. Drink this solution once a day during heavy bleeding. It aids in to reduce heavy bleeding.

Comfrey for Muscle Wasting

Apply a thin layer of Comfrey cream over the affected area. Repeat the process 2 times a day.

Herbal Treatment For Blisters 2

Take 28 grams of dried Marigold ( Gendha ), 28 grams of dried Comfrey root, 2 cups Almond, Olive oil, ½ cup finely chopped beeswax, 10 drops of Lavender essential oil, 10 drops of Tea Tree oil. Heat the herbs gently in Olive oil for 2-4 hours. When it becomes yellow in color, strain it. Apply this on Blisters.

Take 1/4th cup each of Witch Hazel and Comfrey.
Put 2 tablespoon of Patchouli essential oil.
Apply on the affected area with Cotton balls.

Herbal Treatment For Cuts 3

Make a paste by adding three tablespoon of Comfrey and one tablespoon of Lobelia. Apply it over the affected area. It will cure the cuts more quickly.

Herbal Treatment For Breast Cancer 2

Take out the leaves of Comfery and the roots of Marshmallow. Quantity should be equal. Boil it in 1/2 liter of water for about 15 minutes. Fomentation with this water daily.

Herbal Treatment For Croup 1

Prepare a decoction of the leaves of Mullein and roots of Comfrey. Take both in equal quantity. Add one tablespoon of Garlic juice in it. Have it once a day.

Herbal Treatment For Debility 4

Prepare a decoction by taking equal quantity of all the following herbs for 15-20 minutes.
1) Comfrey root
2) White Horehound
3) Inula Helenium
Strain. Fill it in a bottle. Take 1/2 cup two times a day. If you want to preserve add Glycerine and Honey.

Herbal Treatment For Fracture 1

With this cup of tea calcium supplement is also needed. Prepare a decoction of the following herbs.
4 table spoon of Horse tail grass
3 tablesoon of comfrey root
2 parts of oat
1part of lobeila
Have two cups two times a day.

Herbal Treatment For Respiratory Diseases 2

Mix equal quantities of powdered Ephedra ( Amsania in India ), Comfrey, Verbascum Thapsus, Cherry, Licorice ( Mulethi in India ), Ginger ( Adrak in India ), Cinnamon ( Dalchini in India ), Inula Helenium ( Pushkaraula in India ) and Wild Ginger ( Jangli Adrak in India ).
Take 2-3 tablespoons throughout the day with warm water.

Herbal Treatment For Heavy Menstrual Bleeding 4

Take the following herbs-
2 tablespoons each of dried Liquorice ( Mulethi ) root and Wild Yam root.
One tablespoon of powdered Burdock root and Comfrey root.
2-3 tablespoons of Dandelion root.
Put these herbs in 4-5 cups of cold water and simmer for 15 minutes in a covered pot.
Drink thrice daily for 3-4 months.

Herbal Treatment For Epigastric Hernia 1

Apply a poultice, made of Comfrey root powder, Glycerin, Pine Tree bark powder and lukewarm water over the abdomen area.
