Description

Brain Stroke is a disorder of the Brain.
When the Brain cells die because of inadequate supply of oxygen, we call it a Stroke. The functions of the Brain become impaired after a Stroke.

Brain is a very important part of the Body. Like other body parts, it needs a continuous supply of oxygen rich blood. The blood also carries nutrients that are required by the brain tissues to function properly. But, in any case if the blood fails to reach the brain, the tissues begin to die. The death of the tissues in the Brain is termed as Stroke.
The Stroke may be associated with Atherosclerosis. In this the blood vessels are blocked due to deposition of plaque on their walls.
When a Stroke occurs due to the formation of a blood clot in the Brain, we call it an Ischemic stroke.
If a Stroke occurs due to a ruptured artery, we call it an hemorrhagic stroke.

Differential Diagnosis :
People are often get confused between the three terms that is Stroke, Cardiac arrest and Heart Attack. They all are associated with the Heart, but are different.

Heart attack: The main function of the Heart is to pump the Blood. It takes deoxygenated blood from the body parts and in return gives oxygen rich blood to the Body organs. Oxygen rich blood acts as a fuel. Some times the fatty matter starts depositing on the walls of the Arteries and over the time, they form plaque. As a result the Arteries will become narrower and get hardened. Due to this the Heart muscles will not get enough supply of Blood and causes Heart Attack.

Cardiac Arrest: It is associated with the electrical impulses that occurs in the Heart. The Heart muscles contract and relax to pump the blood. If some thing goes wrong with these electrical impulses, the Heart will not pump the Oxygen rich blood.

Stroke: It occurs in Brain but is a result of malfunctioning of the Heart. When the Heart fails to pump the oxygen rich blood to the Brain, it causes Brain stroke.

Brain Stroke General

Brain is a major part in the Body. It is responsible for the functions body performs. It takes signals in the form of odor, taste, pain, voice from various body organs, translates them and prepares a suitable response for them. Brain needs constant supply of oxygen for proper functioning. Blood flows in arteries and carries oxygen to the brain for its functioning. Stroke happens when the flow of blood in arteries is interrupted either by a blockage or by an artery burst. In the absence of oxygen, Brain cells start dying and the actions performed by that area are lost, resulting into loss of memory or loss of muscle control.
Stroke affects nearly 15 million people around the world. It claims six million deaths and approximately five million disabled lives in a year. Its severity can be imagined from a fact that Stroke is considered the third leading cause of death in women, and fifth in men.
Stroke can occur at any age, It may occur in children as well. It generally affects people with age 55 and above or a person having sedentary life style, smoking or alcoholic habits. It is also common in a person with High Blood pressure, High Cholesterol, Obesity and Diabetes. Stroke is preceded by certain specific warning signs. Identifying these and taking appropriate steps can help in reducing severity of Stroke. Its symptoms vary person to person, they may occur alone or in a combination. Its initial symptoms may occur on face, arms and speech. It causes weakness in face or facial paralysis, numbness in arms especially one sided, difficulty in speaking or understanding, vision problems like blurred or decreased vision in one or both eyes, Dizziness, Headache caused by unknown reason.
Stroke has several types. Some common forms of Stroke are given below.
Ischaemic Stroke: Arteries carry blood from heart to the brain. When supply of Blood gets halted either due to a blood clot or by a fatty material in the arteries, Ischaemic Stroke occurs. It is the most prevalent type of Stroke, It is alone responsible for 80 percent of Strokes.
Haemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding inside the Brain. Bleeding occurs due to rupturing of weakened blood vessels. Blood starts accumulating and creates pressure on the surrounding Brain tissues.
Transient ischaemic attack is commonly known as Mini-Stroke. It is caused by interruption of Blood supply to the Brain for a short time. Its symptoms are temporary and may last for a maximum of 24 hours. It is understood as a warning sign. If not treated, a major Stroke may occur in future.
Cervical Artery Dissection Stroke happens due to decrease in Blood supply to Brain as a result of torn artery in the neck.
Chances of encountering Stroke can be minimised by doing slight modification to the life style.
Exercise increases the Blood flow and consumption of oxygen by the Body. A moderate level Exercise of 30 minutes daily maybe beneficial.
Stop Cigarette smoking, it doubles the chances of Stroke occurrence.
Stroke affects people with High Blood pressure. Alcohol increases Blood pressure levels in the body, cutting down on the alcohol consumption means reducing the chances of Stroke occurrence.
Eat healthy fruits, vegetables and reduce the amount of Cholesterol to avoid Stroke.

Hello,

My dad had stoke for over 5-6 years now. He lost his ability to speak, he only makes sounds to respond. He also lost his ability to use his right hand and leg. But he's still functioning properly like he's able to still make very informed decisions. The only issue is that he's unable to talk, he cannot write nor type with his right hand.

What would you recommend for the improvement of his side of the brain that controls his speech ,right and left hand?

Thanks alot
